Sustainable Shower Initiative

Sustainable Shower Initiative

In an effort to start a new decade with a clear statement and action toward sustainable practices, the Seattle Hotel Association has announced a goal to replace single-use shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel containers with larger-format dispensers in hotel guest room showers. The move follows a hotel industry commitment toward sustainability. The Seattle Hotel Association represents 80 member hotels comprising more than 16,000 guestrooms, serving millions of guests annually.

Approximately a quarter of the Seattle Hotel Association (SHA) member hotels have already completed the conversion to large bulk dispensers of shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel, with most properties anticipating a full conversation to larger-format dispensers by the end of 2021.

The commitment comes as hotels continue to take innovative steps to create environmentally friendly hotels and guest rooms both locally and nationally. Many Seattle hotels have already made proactive efforts to phase out single-use plastic containers in guest room showers. SHA estimates this new initiative could keep hundreds of thousands of single-use plastic containers out of landfills.

The “Sustainable Shower” initiative is the latest of many initiatives by Seattle hotels and the national hotel industry to demonstrate leadership and encourage efficiency and waste reduction. From multi-day bath towel and bedding offerings for guests to energy-efficient LEED-certified buildings, the local hotel industry is setting the example that green practices are not only preferred, they make good business sense.
